Así las cosas: Lo que hicieron con la Enterprise B para la peli ST: Generaciones no me gusta. No me gustó cuando la vi por primera vez, ni ahora, ni nunca.
Fué claramente hecha a las apuradas, con la mente puesta solamente en vender el modelo para armar, y tenía que lucir parecida, pero diferente de la Excelsior.
¿Y qué hicieron? Tan sólo añadieron inútiles y mal diseñados ornamentos "art decó", dos motores de impulso superfluos y mal emplazados (muy tecnológico), y un sutil cambio en el patrón de colores, y voilá: la nueva Enterprise B, damas y caballeros.-a propósito: los colectores Bussard siempre, SIEMPRE, deben brillar en rojo-.
No les importó arruinar las hermosas y aerodinámicas líneas de la Excelsior para siempre (parece que los agregados no se pueden quitar, ya que siguieron usando el modelo tal cual quedó).
¡¿Qué cuernos les pasó?! ¡Tenían el presupuesto de una producción cinematográfica, por todos los demonios!¿Tenían que ser tan miserables? ¿No podían haber desarrollado mejores ideas?
Seguro pensaron: "Si va a estar en pantalla por tan solo un minuto y medio, y nunca en una buena toma, ¿para qué molestarse?" Probablemente tenían razón. Además, la historia tampoco era tan buena como para gastar mucho dinero en ella.
¡Pero es la ENTERPRISE, qué diablos! Tengan algo de respeto, cretinos, y hagan algo digno de tal nombre. (¡Qué verguenza, John Eaves!)
hace poco, mientras me autofelicitaba por ver mis dibujos expuestos en EX ASTRIS SCIENTIA (http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/index.htm) el sitio web de Bernd Schneider, fuí asaltado nuevamente por estos pensamientos, sólo que esta vez los acompañaba una pregunta:
"Esta bien, sabelotodo, ¿qué hubieras hecho vos si te daban poco tiempo para entregar y un presupuesto miserable?
Bueno, esto es lo que hubiera hecho yo.
Lo que sigue es un inútil ejercicio de imaginación (no mucha). Un juego de "¿qué pasaría si...?" orientado a movilizar y entretener.
Por supuesto, el modelo de la 1701-B ha estado por ahí por unos catorce años ya, y esto no cambia nada, de más está decirlo.
Pero fué muy divertido hacerlo.
Me di una semana de plazo
Los cambios son sutiles, queriendo preservar las líneas del modelo, pero lo suficientemente notorios para diferenciarlo del original.
Elegí centrarme en algunos problemas, como el reducido tamaño del puente de mando y la bahía de transbordadores trasera, a menudo mencionados cuando se habla de la Excelsior.
Tampoco me gustaba la puerta de la bahía ni las "aletas" de los motores warp. Respecto a estos, traté de acercarlos a los motores de la clase Ambassador, haciendo de este modelo un "puente" entre la dos clases.
Hay un montón de cambios que se pudieron haber hecho sin justificación, preferí restringirme a aquellos que tenían más sentido, siempre teniendo en cuenta que se trata de una nave de la clase Excelsior.
Está bien, tal vez las "cúpulas invernadero" de la parte dorsal son un poco mucho, pero semejante superficie plana era una tentación irresistible (sin mencionar que tienen mucho más sentido que los dos motores de impulso "extra").
Al fin de cuentas, creo que el modelo se ve bastante bien y no hubiese sido más costoso de construir que el que apareció en pantalla. Y si, pienso que el modelo para armar se hubiera vendido como pan recién sacado del horno, tan sólo por ser una nueva "Enterprise".
Sería interesante preguntarles a esos Trekkies con aptitud para el diseño "¿qué naves no les gustan, por qué y qué harían al respecto?" y ver qué pasa. (Apuesto que la Enterprise del Cap. Archer sería una firme candidata para una completa modificación)

The thing is: I don't like what they did for the 1701-B. Never did, not when I first saw it, not now, not ever.
It seems quite clear that it was made in a hurry, the powers that be were urged to sell the model kit, which has to look related but different from the Excelsior.
What did they do? Just added some pointless, poorly designed "art deco" clip-ons, superfluous and badly placed impulse engines (very technological stuff) and slightly changed color pattern, et voilá, the all new Enterprise B, ladies and gentlemen -by the way, the bussard collectors always, ALWAYS, must glow in red-.
Never mind if they screwed the beautiful lines or the aerodynamic profile of the Excelsior model for good (apparently the add-ons can't be removed, since they kept using the model as is).
C'mon! They were on a feature movie budget, for crying out loud! Do they have to be that cheap? Couldn’t they come with some better ideas?
"Hey, it’ll be on screen for about a minute and a half, and never in a good shot! Why bother?" they'd probably said. And perhaps they were right. Besides, the script wasn’t all that good to through that much money on it.
Anyway, it was an ENTERPRISE! Have some respect, you creeps, and do something worthy of the name! (shame on you, John Eaves)
The other day, while padding myself on the back after seen my drawings posted on EX ASTRIS SCIENTIA (http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/index.htm) Bernd Schneider's site, this line of thought came back, only this time a question piggy-backed:
"Alright, geek, enough complaining. What would you have done, given a short deadline and a lousy budget?"
Well, this is what I would have done.
The following is a futile exercise of imagination (not much, though), a “what if?” game, aimed solely to intrigue and entertain. Of course, the 1701-B model has been around for some fourteen years now, and this changes nothing, needless to say.
But it was a lot of fun doing it.
I gave myself a week to finish it.
The changes are kind of subtle, as to preserve the lines of the model, but quite distinct to differentiate it from the original.
I chose to address a few problems, such as the small bridge dome and rear shuttle bay, often mentioned when referred to the Excelsior. I didn’t like the shuttle bay door either, nor the “flaps” on the nacelles. Regarding these, I tried to make them closer to those on the Ambassador class, making this model sort of a “bridge” between the two classes.
A lot of things could’ve been modified without justification, I tried to restrain myself to the ones that really make sense, always keeping in mind that the Enterprise B is an Excelsior class starship.
O.K., maybe the twin “botanical domes” on the dorsal were a little too much, but all that flat surface was an irresistible temptation (not to mention that they make a whole lot more sense than the extra impulse engines).
All in all, I think the final model looks good and it wouldn’t be more expensive to make than that on the movie. And, yes, I believe the model kit would have been sold like fresh donuts, just because it’s a new Enterprise.
